Culture Project, warmly congratulate Ismail Hamalaw, on the publication of his novel in the German language. As an outstanding Kurdish writer, novelist, and poet, he has long contributed to Kurdish contemporary literature with depth and originality.
His new novel, published in German, is titled Solitude. It was first published in Kurdish (Sorani) in South Kurdistan in 2020.” Isolation” is a complex, multi-layered novel by Ismail Hamalaw that follows the life paths of various characters in a world full of fractures, alienation, and human abysses. The author paints a bleak panorama of human existence, spanning from the red-light district in Germany through the post-Soviet era to post-revolutionary Egypt.

The novel tells the story of a Kurdish social worker in Germany and illuminates the lives of German, Russian, and Ukrainian immigrants from their own authentic perspective.
Unlike many works of migration literature, “Vereinsamung” (Isolation) forgoes the distanced outside view and instead lets the migrants speak for themselves. In dense, powerful prose, their fates intertwine with the loneliness that also shapes German society in its modern existence. Through this interweaving, a profound portrait emerges of a society in transition – an uncompromising novel about new beginnings, failure, and uncomfortable truths.
Hamalaw is literary voice that has rarely been heard in German-language literature until now.
