class=\"editorcontent\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>Johan Dijkstra bezocht de driejarige HBS en volgde vanaf 1915 middaglessen aan de Academie Minerva. In 1919 kreeg hij de bronzen academie medaille voor zijn werk. Van 1919 tot 1920 studeerde hij aan de Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, waar hij in 1920 de akte M.O. Tekenen behaalde. Johan Dijkstra hoorde bij de oprichters van De Ploeg, maar kon door zijn verblijf in Amsterdam er in de eerste jaren niet bij zijn. Terug in Groningen voorzag hij in zijn levensonderhoud door het maken van illustraties en reclamewerk. In april 1923 organiseerde Dijkstra met Altink en Wiegers het eerste lustrumfeest van De Ploeg op Blauwb\u00f6rgje, een plek net buiten de stad waar veel geschilderd werd door de Ploegleden. Vanaf begin 1926 tot in 1940 exposeerde Dijkstra vrijwel jaarlijks buiten Groningen. Ook had hij solo-tentoonstellingen in Groningen bij Pictura, in Amsterdam en Den Haag. Tussen 1928 en 1940 had hij geen bestuursfuncties meer bij De Ploeg, maar deed hij wel zijn best om het ledental uit te breiden. Hierin had hij Werkman als opponent. Sinds 1930 schreef hij recensies voor de Provinciale Groninger Courant, waardoor hij voor velen deel ging uitmaken van het
